Pediatric Eye Care

Giving Your Child the Visual Foundation for Success

Your child's vision shapes how they learn, play, and interact with the world. Yet many vision problems in children go undetected because kids often don't know what "normal" vision looks like — and school screenings catch only a fraction of eye issues.

At Lakefront Eye Care | Aesthetics & Wellness, our pediatric eye exams are designed to be thorough, child-friendly, and focused on catching problems early — when treatment is most effective.

Why School Screenings Aren't Enough

School vision screenings typically test only distance visual acuity — can your child read a chart from across the room? But they miss many conditions that directly impact learning:

  • Farsightedness — a child can pass a distance screening but struggle to see their book or tablet clearly

  • Binocular vision problems — issues with eye teaming, tracking, and focusing that cause reading difficulty and fatigue

  • Amblyopia (lazy eye) — reduced vision in one eye that may not be apparent without proper testing

  • Convergence insufficiency — difficulty coordinating both eyes for close work, often misdiagnosed as ADHD

  • Early myopia — nearsightedness that, if caught early, can be managed with our Myopia Control program

A comprehensive eye exam evaluates all of these — and more.

What to Expect at Your Child's Visit

We know that bringing a young child to the eye doctor can feel daunting. Our team creates a positive, low-pressure experience:

  • Age-appropriate testing methods — we have tools and techniques for every age, from infants to teenagers

  • Patient, kid-friendly communication — we explain everything in a way your child can understand

  • No rush — we take the time needed to get accurate, complete results

Our pediatric exam includes:

  • Visual acuity at distance and near

  • Eye alignment and movement assessment

  • Focusing ability and flexibility

  • Binocular vision evaluation

  • Eye health examination including retinal screening

  • Refractive error measurement (glasses check)

  • Discussion with parents about findings, recommendations, and any concerns

When Should My Child Have an Eye Exam?

The American Optometric Association recommends:

  • First exam: by age 1 (InfantSEE® program)

  • Second exam: before starting school (age 3–5)

  • Annual exams throughout school years — children's eyes change rapidly

If your child is showing any of these signs, schedule an exam sooner:

  • Squinting, tilting, or closing one eye

  • Sitting very close to the TV or holding books close

  • Frequent eye rubbing

  • Complaining of headaches or tired eyes

  • Difficulty with reading or losing their place

  • Avoiding close work or homework resistance

  • Poor hand-eye coordination

Myopia Prevention Starts Here

If your child is becoming nearsighted, early intervention matters. We assess myopia risk factors and, when appropriate, refer to our Myopia Control program — which includes ortho-K, specialty lenses, and atropine therapy to slow progression and protect their long-term eye health.
