Myopia Control

Myopia Control

Protecting Your Child's Vision for the Future

Myopia — nearsightedness — is more than an inconvenience that requires stronger glasses every year. It's a growing epidemic, and without intervention, progressive myopia increases the risk of serious eye conditions later in life, including retinal detachment, glaucoma, and macular degeneration.

At Lakefront Eye Care | Aesthetics & Wellness, our Myopia Control program is designed to do more than correct your child's vision. We work to slow the progression of myopia so your child's eyes stay healthier for a lifetime.

Why Myopia Control Matters Now

If your child's prescription is getting stronger every year, that's not just a glasses problem — it's a signal that their eyes are continuing to elongate, and that trend needs to be addressed. The earlier we intervene, the more effectively we can slow progression and reduce long-term risk.

A Personal Connection

Dr. Jill M. Bert and Dr. Caroline Kucha are both highly myopic themselves and understand firsthand the impact that progressive nearsightedness has on daily life. Both doctors agree that they wish ortho-K and myopia control technology had been available when they were children. That shared personal experience drives their commitment to making the most effective myopia management tools available to every child who walks through our doors.

Our Evidence-Based Approach

We offer multiple proven strategies for myopia control, tailored to each child's age, prescription, lifestyle, and family history:

Orthokeratology (Ortho-K)

Custom rigid gas permeable lenses worn overnight that gently reshape the cornea while your child sleeps. They wake up with clear vision — no glasses or contacts needed during the day. Research has consistently shown that ortho-K slows myopia progression significantly. Dr. Bert and Dr. Kucha are experts in ortho-K fitting and have helped many children achieve excellent results.

Essilor Stellest Lenses

For children who prefer glasses over contact lenses, Essilor Stellest lenses are a breakthrough option. These look and feel like regular glasses but feature an innovative ring of tiny "Highly Aspherical Lenslets" (HAL) surrounding the clear prescription zone. These lenslets create a controlled myopic defocus signal that tells the eye to slow its growth — without affecting visual clarity. Clinical studies show Stellest lenses can slow myopia progression by up to 67% compared to standard single vision lenses when worn full-time. They're an excellent choice for younger children or any child who isn't ready for contact lenses.

Specialty Myopia Control Contact Lenses

Soft multifocal contact lenses specifically designed to slow myopia progression while providing clear daytime vision. These are a great option for children who prefer the convenience of soft lenses.

Atropine Eye Drops

Low-dose atropine drops, used at bedtime, have been shown to slow myopia progression with minimal side effects. This approach can be used alone or in combination with specialty lenses for a comprehensive treatment strategy.

What to Expect

Our Myopia Control program includes:

  • Comprehensive baseline evaluation — including corneal topography, axial length measurement, and a thorough assessment of your child's visual system

  • Customized treatment plan — we'll recommend the approach (or combination of approaches) that best fits your child

  • Regular monitoring — we track prescription changes and eye growth over time to ensure the treatment is working and adjust as needed

  • Parent and patient education — we help your family understand myopia, why it matters, and what role outdoor time and screen habits play in progression

The Sooner, The Better

Myopia control is most effective when started early. If your child is squinting at the board, holding screens close to their face, or has a family history of nearsightedness — don't wait for the next prescription jump.

How to get started: All myopia control begins with a comprehensive eye exam. Schedule your child's exam with Dr. Kucha and mention that you're interested in myopia control — we'll evaluate their candidacy and discuss the best options for their eyes.
