Macular Degeneration

Protecting Your Central Vision

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is the leading cause of vision loss in adults over 50 — but early detection and proactive management can make a significant difference in preserving the sharp, central vision you rely on every day.

At Lakefront Eye Care | Aesthetics & Wellness, we combine advanced imaging technology with a holistic, prevention-focused approach to help our patients stay ahead of this condition.

Understanding Macular Degeneration

The macula is a small but critical area at the center of your retina, responsible for the detailed vision you use to read, drive, recognize faces, and see fine detail. In macular degeneration, this area gradually deteriorates, leading to:

  • Blurred or distorted central vision

  • Difficulty reading or seeing fine detail

  • Dark or empty areas in the center of your vision

  • Colors appearing less vivid

AMD comes in two forms:

  • Dry AMD (most common) — gradual thinning of macular tissue and accumulation of small deposits called drusen

  • Wet AMD — abnormal blood vessels grow beneath the retina and leak fluid or blood, causing more rapid vision loss

Early Detection Through Advanced Imaging

Many patients with early AMD have no symptoms at all. That's why advanced imaging is essential:

  • Eidon Ultra-Wide Field Retinal Imaging — captures high-resolution, true-color images of the macula and surrounding retina, revealing drusen, pigment changes, and other early signs of AMD

  • Zeiss Cirrus OCT 5000 — provides cross-sectional views of retinal layers at micrometer resolution, detecting fluid, thinning, and structural changes that are invisible during a standard exam

These tools allow us to detect AMD in its earliest stages and track even subtle progression over time.

Our Approach to Management

While there is no cure for AMD, proactive management can slow progression and protect your remaining vision:

Nutritional Support
Research has shown that specific nutrients — including vitamins C, E, zinc, lutein, and zeaxanthin — can reduce the risk of AMD progression. Aligned with our cellular medicine philosophy, we provide personalized nutritional guidance to support your macular health, including:

  • AREDS2-based supplement recommendations

  • Anti-inflammatory dietary strategies

  • Guidance on foods rich in macular-protective nutrients

Lifestyle Modifications

  • UV protection for your eyes

  • Smoking cessation support (smoking dramatically increases AMD risk)

  • Weight management and cardiovascular health — both connected to macular health

Monitoring & Coordination

  • Regular OCT and retinal imaging to track changes

  • Amsler grid home monitoring instructions

  • Prompt referral to retinal specialists if wet AMD is detected or suspected
